Scientists use tracking tags to help them learn about the life of wild animals. Some tags are programmed to detach while others wash ashore after an animal dies. People may discover them while harvesting an animal or when walking in the woods or down the beach. This is what happened to Eivin Kilcher of Alaska: The Last Frontier when he was beachcombing with his family on Ushagat Island and they saw something unusual.
