Wildlife Computers Enhances MiniPAT Reliability with Latest Update

Wildlife Computers is excited to announce an important update to the MiniPAT tag that addresses critical performance issues and enhances overall reliability.

A manufacturer change in our standard battery caused unexpected passivation issues, preventing some tags from functioning properly. Normally, battery passivation is a good thing as it prevents battery degradation and gives batteries a longer shelf life. However, the manufacturer’s change led to an unexpected, thicker passivation buildup. To combat this, we began implementing short-term fixes like the battery exercise routine and new tagware to manage passivation levels while looking for our long-term solution. We didn’t stop there. Validation came next. Endless hours were spent on the following to confirm the performance issue fix was the answer to the problem:

  • Testing both passivized and non-passivized batteries
  • Conducting tests across all temperature extremes
  • Performing a wide range of scenario-based tests to simulate real-world conditions and ensure optimal performance in various environments
The MiniPAT is a pop-up archival transmitting tag (PAT tag, also known as a PSAT).

All of this work lead to the new MiniPAT-430. This version, shipping since February, incorporates a capacitor alongside the main battery to improve performance and combat passivation. This redesign slightly increased the tag’s size—3 mm larger diameter and 7 grams heavier but we also took this opportunity to increase the overall buoyancy to allow the tag to float higher in the water after release. More buoyancy helps the tag float with more weight from antifouling paint, heavier tethers, and fouling that may occur during deployment.

We understand that some customers experienced issues with the number of transmissions and tag life falling short of expectations. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are confident that this upgrade will bring the performance of the MiniPAT back to what we all expect. If you have undeployed tags prior to the MiniPAT-430, our Technical Sales Consultants are available to answer any questions you may have about the new design or assist with getting your current tags upgraded.

Thank you for your continued trust in our products. We remain committed to providing you with the highest quality solutions and look forward to your feedback on the improved MiniPAT.
