03 Apr Denali-S7 Field Results Summary
As of January 30, 2025, Denali‑S7 tags have been deployed across a range of seabird species and geographic regions, with results continuing to demonstrate strong performance across attachment methods and study conditions.
Adult Deployments
Field deployments on adult birds have shown consistently positive outcomes, with all completed studies meeting attachment expectations and minimal technical issues reported. Denali‑S7 tags were deployed on Midway Atoll on seven black‑footed albatrosses using a tape‑to‑back attachment. Deployment durations ranged from 80 days to 203 days, with no notable issues observed and all deployments meeting expectations.
Additional deployments:
- New Zealand—seven adult grey‑faced petrels were tagged using a tape‑to‑tail attachment. Deployment durations ranged from 80 days to 128 days. These deployments met expectations overall, with just a single antenna break reported.
- Australia—four pied oystercatchers were tagged using either a harness or tape‑to‑back attachment. While minimum deployment duration is still being evaluated, maximum durations exceeded 232 days.
- Oregon—two rhinoceros auklets were tagged using a suture attachment. Deployment durations ranged from 41 days to 105 days.
Fledgling and Juvenile Deployments
Field results from fledgling and juvenile birds are more limited but continue to inform ongoing evaluation of attachment methods and expected performance.
In New Zealand, a single grey‑faced petrel fledgling was tagged using a tape‑to‑tail attachment. The deployment lasted 26 days, matching both the minimum and maximum duration observed. Overall, this deployment met expectations, with no notable issues reported.
Also in New Zealand, three flesh‑footed shearwaters were tagged using a tape‑to‑tail attachment. Deployment durations ranged from 39 days to more than 60 days. Evaluation of whether these deployments fully met expectations is still ongoing, and notable issues, if any, remain to be determined.
In Australia, three short‑tailed shearwaters were tagged, with attachment methods still under review. Deployment durations ranged from 6 days to more than 8 days. As with the flesh‑footed shearwaters, assessment of expectations and potential issues is ongoing.
Overall Performance
Across species, life stages, and attachment methods, Denali‑S7 deployments to date demonstrate reliable field performance, particularly in adult birds, with long deployment durations and few technical concerns. Ongoing studies in fledgling and juvenile birds will continue to refine expectations and best practices for these applications.
