10 Dec Satellite Tracking Green Turtles in the Chagos Islands
The Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean is home to the world’s largest marine protected area and some pretty cool green turtles. In 2012, Graeme Hays and his team of intrepid biologists conducted one of the first satellite tracking studies on the green turtle in this area. They attached a Wildlife Computers SPLASH tag to help assess home range and diel activity patterns of the turtles. The data showed that even the largest protected area needs to be supplemented by others to help protect these creatures.
