Using Tagging Data and Aerial Surveys to Incorporate Availability Bias in the Abundance Estimation of Blue Sharks

Wildlife Computers PSAT tags were used recently to track blue sharks. Long considered to be an abundant species, the blue shark has been subjected to exploitation and bycatch in recent years—it is estimated that over 10 million blue sharks are killed annually. The study used satellite tags to collect location and time at surface data to help estimate population numbers along with aerial surveys.
