Effects of a Power Plant Closure on Home Ranges of Green Turtles in an Urban Foraging Area

When you have animals that don’t move around a lot but you know their habitat is destined for dramatic changes, Fastloc® GPS can help identify those small-scale fluctuations. Eguchi et al (2020) recently used Fastloc tags to show that east Pacific green turtle residents in San Diego Bay increased their foraging habitat and general space use after a power plant was shut down. Unfortunately, doing something deemed “good” for the environment may have negative consequences for some individuals…but we hope these turtles learn to interact safely with humans as they widen their foraging areas in the bay!
